CUE STUDY

Description:  Lead researcher Annabel Reay and researchers from the Child Narratives Lab in the Psychology Department at the University of California, Irvine are recruiting participants for a research study about how children interpret certain “when” question formats. This study can help us better understand why certain question formats may be more inaccessible to certain age groups, particularly in legal settings; this may inform best child interviewing practices. The study will take place virtually via Zoom. The study will take around 45 minutes, and will occur over a single, virtual session. As part of participating, you as the parent/caregiver will be asked to fill out one short questionnaire to tell us about your child’s demographic information and English language skills. Your child will be asked to view a series of pre-recorded slideshows with different pictures, and asked about the order of the events that took place. The session will take place entirely online and the session will be recorded for data validation purposes.

Compensation: $10 Amazon gift card for completing the study.

Eligibility:
- You are at least 18 years of age or older and are the parent/caregiver of a child between the ages of 4 and 9 years old.
- Your child does not have any developmental delays or disorders that impair their cognition, language, or social functioning.
- You and your child are fluent in English.
- You have access to a stable internet connection and an electronic device that has a working camera and microphone, and can host Zoom (e.g., computer, cell phone, iPad).

If you participate, there is no anticipated direct benefit.

CUE STUDY FAQ

Can I be in the room with my child during the session?
We prefer that you are in the room with the child but sitting behind them on the Zoom call. We find that this can help children’s attention and keep them focused. You can leave the room if you wis, we just ask that you stay until your child’s session is recording and the task is right about to begin to help them with the computer if needed.

However, it is important that you don’t answer for your child or help them. We want to understand how they think and interpret the stories independently.
What are the details about developmental delay criteria?
We typically look for a current diagnosis of a cognitive, speech, or language delay from their child’s physician and/or clinician. If you are unsure if your child meets the requirements, feel free to email us and we can provide further clarification!
Am I able to view the final results of the study?
The goal of this study, and of our lab in general, is not to make clinical or developmental assessments of your child. We just want to look at overall trends and learn more about how children understand and remember event sequences.

If you wish to hear about our research processes and results, you can keep on eye on our website, view our newsletter, or email childnarrativeslab@uci.edu with your name and email to be added to a list with whom we will share our results once the study is published!
